CHAPTER TWENTY

Eventually, Levi managed to sate Nox’s curiosity. He knew it was a temporary reprieve, but he had given her a lot to think about. The concentration on her face was a bit intimidating, but while she ruminated, Levi was able to see the Venture clearly.

The airship was a mess.

Magic glowed all around the ship as the broken pieces were removed. Levi watched while the anchors for the destroyed balloons were removed out and stacked. The jagged holes in the hull got treated to the teeth of saws. Some of the wood was being smoothed with magic, others simply torn off.

One aspect that truly worried him—he saw at least three huge bronze cannisters that had to be the mana engines outside the ship. The Venture used five such engines to fly. The only reason he could think to remove them would be if they were a danger to the vessel.

Nox was still thinking and hadn’t yet turned back around. She nuzzled into him absently, so he stroked her back as he let his chin rest on top of her head. Nox’s warmth was comforting him while he thought over what he saw ahead of them.

Only two engines and no balloons. There’s no way she can fly. All the math might be over my head, but I did learn enough to grasp the basics. A lot of that piping looks corroded, which means the engines nearly burst, or maybe they did. We are probably lucky one of them didn’t explode and kill us all.

Levi kissed the tip of Nox’s ear, but she didn’t even notice. He could feel her hands moving behind his back. I’d put money down that she’s envisioning how to fly…

Some of his worry faded when he saw a minotaur bellowing commands to a group of students using magic as a crane. It was obviously Beatrice, and when he searched he found a small green-skinned figure near the broken engines.

Dump Truck picked up on his excitement through their bond and started thudding toward Glint without prompting. Their less-than-subtle approach was made more obvious by the ring of silence that surrounded him. Most of the students simply stopped talking, and one actually spit on the ground when they looked at Levi.

I swear to god if you do that again I’ll tie your tentacles in a knot, you squid-haired bastard, he fumed to himself. His sympathy for how he might have scared them was dwindling fast.

He was taking deep breaths to stay calm when they reached Glint. The swamp imp had a notebook open and was scribbling away with a crystal-tipped stylus. Glint’s goggles made his blue eyes even larger, and the lenses kept rotating as he reviewed the engines.

“Hey, Levi, heard you tried to blow us all up, then summoned a horde of monsters… want to talk about it?” Glint asked.

I did WHAT? Levi found himself blinking rapidly as he tried to translate that—all he could do was gape at Glint in shock.

He saw his friend’s reflection in the bronze engine and caught the tiny smile on his lips.
